If your Model S or Model X sags overnight, hisses when it is parked, or throws a suspension warning on the screen, the air system is trying to tell you something. Here is how to read each symptom, what is usually behind it, and what the fix actually involves.

You walk out in the morning and the car is not sitting the way you left it. One corner is low, or the whole rear end has settled onto the bump stops. Maybe you heard a soft hiss the night before, or the screen threw a suspension message on your way to work.
The short answer: a Model S or Model X that sits low overnight almost always has an air leak, and the most common source is a failing air strut, not the compressor. The compressor usually fails second, after months of overworking itself to keep up with a leak it cannot win against. Catching the leak early is what keeps a one-corner repair from turning into a compressor job on top of it.
Here is how to read what your car is doing, in plain terms, from someone who works on these in Bay Area driveways every week.
How Tesla air suspension actually works
Model S and Model X (and the newer Model S Plaid) use air springs instead of steel coils at each corner. A compressor feeds pressurized air into a reservoir, and the car meters that air into each strut to hold ride height. That is how the car can lower itself at highway speed for range, raise up for a steep driveway, and remember to do it again at the same GPS point next time.
It is a genuinely good system when it is healthy. The tradeoff is that it has moving air, rubber bladders, valves, and moisture to deal with. Rubber ages. Seals dry out. Nothing lasts forever, and on a car with 80,000 or 100,000 miles on the original struts, the air side is a normal wear item.

What are the warning signs of Tesla air suspension failure?
1. The car sags overnight or after a few hours
This is the clearest signal there is. Park the car level, note where it sits, come back in the morning. If one corner has dropped noticeably, that strut is leaking. If the whole car is down, you may have a leak plus a system that has given up trying to hold pressure. A healthy air system holds height for days.
2. A hiss you can hear when the car is quiet
EVs are silent, which is actually a diagnostic advantage. Stand next to each wheel in a quiet garage. A steady hiss near a wheel well points at the air spring or a fitting. A hiss you only hear when the car is raising or lowering is usually a valve block issue.
3. The compressor runs longer, louder, or more often
Normally you barely notice it. When you start hearing it cycle every time you get in, or running for 20 seconds when it used to run for 5, it is chasing a leak. This is the stage where fixing the leak saves you the compressor. Ignore it, and the compressor eventually cooks itself, and now you are replacing two things instead of one.
4. A suspension message on the screen
Messages like a suspension fault or adaptive ride control being unavailable mean the system has detected it cannot achieve or hold a commanded height. Sometimes the car will also refuse to raise, or limit your speed. That is the car protecting itself, not being dramatic.
5. Clunks, creaks, and a ride that got worse
Air struts also contain a damper, and the damper can wear out independently of the air spring. If the car crashes over expansion joints or has picked up a clunk over speed bumps, the strut may be tired even if it still holds height. Worth noting: a clunk on a Model S or X is not automatically the air system. Control arm bushings and links make very similar noises, which is why we diagnose the noise before quoting the part.

Why Bay Area cars see this sooner than you would expect
We do not get road salt out here, which helps. What we do have is a lot of stop-and-go, a lot of driveways and parking structures that make the car raise and lower constantly, and roads (looking at you, 880 and half of downtown San Jose) that keep the suspension working. Every raise and lower cycle is a cycle on the air spring. A car that lives in the South Bay and does a lot of short trips can put more cycles on the system than a car that commutes 40 highway miles each way.
Coastal humidity plays a small part too. Moisture that makes it past the dryer sits in the reservoir and lines, and over years that is not kind to a compressor.
What does the repair actually involve?
For a single leaking corner, the fix is replacing that air strut. It is a contained job: the car gets supported, the wheel comes off, the strut comes out, the new one goes in, and the system gets calibrated so the car knows where its heights are. If the compressor has been running hard for a long time, we will check it and the dryer while we are in there, because replacing a strut and leaving a half-dead compressor to feed it is how you end up doing this twice.
The honest part: air struts are not cheap parts, and anyone quoting you a suspiciously low number is either using a part you will not be happy with in two years or has not seen the car. We quote after we look. If the diagnosis points somewhere else entirely, like control arms, we will tell you that instead of selling you struts you do not need.

- Park level tonight and take a photo of the car from the side.
- Take the same photo in the morning from the same spot and compare.
- Stand at each wheel in a quiet moment and listen for a hiss.
- Note the compressor. Is it running more than it used to?
If any of those come back suspicious, get it looked at before the compressor joins the party.

Can I drive my Tesla with a failing air suspension?
Short distances at low speed, usually yes, but it is not something to live with. A car sitting on the bump stops rides badly, wears tires unevenly, and can trigger speed limiting. If the car has dropped to the ground on one corner, get it looked at rather than driving it that way.
Is it always the air strut, or could it be the compressor?
Both fail, but leaks are far more common as the first failure, and a leak is what kills compressors. If the compressor is running constantly, we look for the leak first.
Do Model 3 and Model Y have air suspension?
No. Standard Model 3 and Model Y use conventional coil springs and dampers, so none of this applies to them. Those cars have their own common wear points, mostly bushings and control arms.
Can I convert my Model S or X to coilovers instead?
Conversion kits exist and some owners go that route to get away from the air system entirely. It changes how the car rides and you lose the adjustable height feature. How long do Tesla air struts typically last?
There is a wide range. Plenty of cars go well past 100,000 miles on originals, and others start leaking earlier, especially if the car does a lot of height cycling. Mileage matters less than cycles and age of the rubber.
